Leadership styles

Leadership is the relationship in which one person influence others to work together willingly on related tasks to attain that which the leader desires.

The key elements of leadership are communication & ability to influence. Every leader has his own style to lead or influence people, hence leadership styles adopted by leaders have been classified in traditional & modern context.

Traditional

1. Autocratic-An autocratic is one who takes all decisions by himself & expects to be obeyed by subordinates without being questioned.
2. Consultative or participative-Leader involves people, takes their opinion & makes a decision.
3. Bureaucratic-This style is more often used in government departments. The leader insists on following the organization’s rules & formalities.
4. Manipulative-The leader believes that followers should be manipulated for attaining the goal. Here, subordinates needs are viewed as tool to extract performance.

Modern

1. Directing-The leader provides specific instructions & closely supervises task accomplishment.
2. Coaching-The leader continues to direct but also explains things, suggest & support progress.
3. Supporting-The leader facilitates & supports efforts towards task accomplishments and shares responsibilities for decision making with them.
4. Delegating-The leaders turns over responsibility for decision making & problem solving to subordinates.

Friends, there is no best style of leadership. The leader must constantly change to meet the new situations & needs of new people.
Flexibility is the key today. Thus the ideal form of leadership today is Situation Adaptable Leadership (SAL).

Pfizer Wyeth deal and its impact on us

As news that Pfizer is near a deal to buy Wyeth for more than $60 billion in cash and stock has created a lot of buzz in the market.A combination of Pfizer and Wyeth, which has been long envisioned throughout the industry, would make Pfizer, already the world’s biggest drug company, even larger.Pfizer had revenue of more than $48 billion in 2007, and Wyeth’s sales exceeding $22 billion. Their combination would put pressure on rival companies to seek their own mergers as they are already getting impacted by a thinning pipeline of new products and a growing number of patent expirations. So what does it mean for Sanofi-Aventis, a new round of mergers and acquisations and some of the potential takeover candidates include the conventional drug giants Bristol-Myers and Schering-Plough and the biotechnology players Amgen and Biogen Idec. With the set-back of Acomplia, Plavix patent expiry nearing in 2011 which is expected to touch $8billion in sales by 2010 and focus of the new Obama administration to reduce the healthcare cost by replacing branded drugs with cheap generics could result in a significant revenue loss for the company. So i think a big-ticket acquisation is just on the cards.Even the new CEO has also cleared his intentions of acquiring other companies. And what does it mean for us here in India, well India is now in a strategic position for the company with its low cost production capacity and cheap clinical research capabilites. Further a big acquisation will result in the creation of lots of new opputinites for the current SA employees in India. So guys we have a tough but exciting time ahead.

Oscar and Pather Panchali (Song of the Little Road)

A foreign director Danny Boyle, comes to India and shoots a film, Slumdog Millionaire, that depicts considerable cruelty, poverty and squalor and takes some of the same truths, dramatizes and exaggerates them inside a fantastical story – in which a slum boy jumps into an oozing latrine, for the autograph of Amitabh Bachchan. It wins four Golden Globes and 10 Oscar nominations. Most of India is delighted; while some are outraged about the western filmmakers obsession of depicting India as "poverty porn" which is damaging the image of a country on the brink of becoming a superpower.

While at the same time domestic filmmakers are chided for the timidity of their vision and mindless escapism of their output and most importantly their inability to get an Oscar. But is Oscar the ultimate recognition of the genius of a film or a filmmaker… Not really. Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali put Indian cinema on the world map and is now considered a monument to humanism. But in 1955 its account of an impoverished family in Bengal drew a hostile response in some government circles and Ray was accused of "exporting poverty". Pather Panchali has a universal humanist appeal. Though the film deals with the grim struggle for survival by a poor family, it has no trace melodrama. What is projected in stead is the respect for human dignity. The film develops its characters and the atmosphere slowly and resolutely. The narrative builds up to a powerful climax as we begin to empathies with the character.

In the USA, Pather Panchali played at the 5th Avenue Playhouse for a record 36 weeks, breaking the previous record held by The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The film went on to get many accolades like
  • President's Gold & Silver Medals, New Delhi, 1955
  • Best Human Document, Cannes 1956
  • Diploma Of Merit, Edinbugh, 1956
  • Vatican Award, Rome, 1956
  • Golden Carbao, Manila, 1956
  • Best Film and Direction, San Francisco, 1957
  • Selznik Golden Laurel, Berlin, 1957
  • Best Film, Vancouver, 1958
  • Critics' Award - Best Film, Stratford, (Canada), 1958
  • Best Foreign Film, New York, 1959
  • Kinema Jumpo Award: Best Foreign Film, Tokyo 1966
  • Bodil Award: Best Non-European Film of the Year, Denmark, 1966

But it failed to won an Oscar, although the Academy of Motion Pictures recognized the contribution of Satyajit Ray to world cinema and awarded him a lifetime achievement award on his deathbed. So even if Rehman or Gulzar sahab doesn’t wins the Oscar, no one can doubt their cinematic genius.

Market segmentation

Organization that sell to consumers & business market realize that they cannot sell to all buyers in the market, & all buyers cannot be approached in the same way. Companies generally identify the parts of the market that they can serve best. There r 3 basic philosophies that guide a company’s approach to its market. Mass marketing is the decision to mass-produce & sell a single product to maximum number of buyers. Product variety marketing presents different choices to set the company’s product apart from competitors. Companies following this philosophy produce two or more products with different features. Target marketing is the decision to identify different groups that compose the market & develop specific products for each of these groups. Sellers today prefer this last approach since its more helpful in spotting opportunities. The market segmentation is the act of dividing the market into distinct group of buyers who might merit separate products, marketing mixes. Markets can be segmented using different variables & marketers often try several approaches.

BLOCKBUSTER

What is it that makes a brand a blockbuster. Is it just sales of more than $ 1billion or something else, well according to Prof John A. Quelch of Business Administration at Harvard Business School, there are Five S's, the five definingcharacteristics of blockbusters:
1. Sheer size. A blockbuster has a transformational impact on a company and an industry, often opening up new markets worldwide. Blockbusters break sales records and exceed expectations. Around 100 pharmaceutical brands exceed $1 billion in annual sales. Procter & Gamble has 23 such brands.
2.Speed. It's not just the sales volume; it's the speed of the sales trajectory. Remember that the original blockbuster was a bomb that could destroy an entire city block. Blockbuster brands address pressing consumer needs so well that they often enjoy vertical sales liftoff. Think Viagra.
3.Scarcity. A blockbuster brand is often in such high demand that stock-outs and shortages occur in the market. Remember the consumer lines to buy the new iPhone? As imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the speedy availability of counterfeits is another indicator of popularity.
4.Sustainability. A blockbuster brand is not a one hit wonder. It is a gift that keeps on giving. Remember Intel's Pentium chip. Or look at the seven Harry Potter books and five companion movies. Adding DVD and merchandise sales, theme parks, etc., Advertising Age valued the Potter economy at $15 billion.
5.Sizzle. A blockbuster does not just address an important need. It does so in an exciting and accessible way. Pfizer's Lipitor was not the first cholesterol reducer but superior marketing and sales made Lipitor number one. And in the movie world, think of the magical and memorable special effects in the Star Wars series.

MEDITATION

In this competitive world everyone is striving hard to leave his footprint & in the process to do so people r not living their real life. They r so much involved in the materialistic world that’s the reason their behavior/objective is controlled by not their own brain or not on the basis of their needs but by the people around them. People spend their whole life to maintain social status & in the process they develop a habit to spend more than earning, which causes stress.
Meditation is an art to enter into a state of mind where we can deeply relax & feel the ultimate bliss.Following r the few steps to meditate.
1. First of all just find the place to meditate which should be calm & undisturbed.
2. Do not lie down, just sit in whatever position u feel relaxed.
3. Close ur eyes & start taking 4-5 deep breaths, hold ur breath for few seconds once u inhale & then let it go slowly with the supreme word ”OM”.
4. As u have closed ur eyes just try to focus on a point in the dark.
5. Initially u have to imagine but gradually u will see with ur closed eyes a bright light in the dark coming from the point u have focused.
6. Do not lose ur focus, just relax all ur muscles from head to toe.
7. Now imagine a staircase towards the point.
8. Visualize that u r moving towards the bright light, just leave all worries, tensions, stress with each step of urs towards god.
9. Feel the aroma of positivity & bliss. Enjoy the moment as much as u can.
10. Now come back through the same staircase & slowly open ur eyes.

Wish u a spiritual life.

Sanofi-aventis is alerting pharmacists to an error in the patient information leaflet (PIL) for Tarivid (ofloxacin) 200mg and 400mg tablets distributed since 2 January 2009.
The PIL incorrectly states that the 200mg tablets are marked with the letters “MXL” and that the 400mg tablets are marked with the letters “MXI”. The PIL should state that the 200mg tablets are marked with “MXI” and that the 400mg tablets are marked with “MXL”. The tablets are correctly marked.
Hope we don`t have a problem in India.

I think we all have one thing common & that is we stretch our lips whenever we read or hear something good about us & sometimes this smile for just 3-4 sec can make our day full of auspicious events .Looking at the competitive world one thing i can say that very few people possess the quality to find good in others.i m really grateful to mr banga who could not only see good things among us but also could spare some time to share what he feels.I want to start a chain of reactions where we all can share our feelings about each others.I know its not easy to share what u feel but at the same time i know that its just a little hasitation so plz keep it aside & start sharing.I request u to plz start this with ur family members they will certainly feel good & after that u r most welcome on blog....mr banga, I want to tell u that u r one of the most dedicated person I have ever worked with.creativity is one of ur strength & I observed that u always keep on thinking how best u can deliver.u r affable & always try to create such an atmosphere so that ur subordinates can also deliver their best.Guys, keep on sharing……
